Program & Instruction
Program Descriptions
To realize its objectives, The First Tee of Connecticut has created a continuum of program opportunities for youth throughout the state. The continuum begins by introducing young people to the game and teaching them the necessary skills to succeed at golf. As the participants’ skill levels increase, programs have been developed to provide ongoing opportunities to practice and play in a more competitive setting. To learn more about a specific program in your area, click on the program below.

In-School Instruction
- Thousands of inner city youth are introduced to golf through lessons taught during physical education classes at the school. The goal of this program is to reach thousands of youth in different cities throughout Connecticut. Those who show a further interest in the game are encouraged to participate in other The First Tee of Connecticut programs such as Group Lessons and Teams.

Group Lessons
– Youth are taught how to play the game, including the etiquette and rules, through golf lessons with no greater than an 8:1 student/instructor ratio. Hundreds of children participate in this more intensive golf program that prepares them for eventual course play. A Life Skills component is also taught during each Group Lessons class.

TFTCT Teams
– For those youth with more advanced skill, The First Tee Teams allows them to practice and play matches with other youth from his/her city. There is usually both a junior varsity (ages 11-14) and varsity (ages 15-18) TFTCT Team in different regions of the state. These children play nine-hole matches once per week during the summer. Team members are also taught more advanced life skills through this program. The season concludes with an end-of-season Team Tournament that brings together all TFTCT Teams from around the state.

TFTCT Golf Squads – TFTCT Golf Squads will be established with select youth groups around the state (i.e. Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCAs, etc). These squads will meet once/week during the golf season (spring - fall) at the golf course. They would be taught the Par-Level curriculum along with golf skills over the course of approximately 25 weeks. The goal is to prepare children to pass the Par-Level within TFTCT’s program and prepare them for the Birdie level and eventual TFTCT Team eligibility.

Special Needs Group Instruction
– The First Tee of Connecticut works with selected organizations to introduce and teach golf to youth with special needs. If you are interested in having The First Tee of Connecticut work with your group, please call 860-882-1660.

Getting Kids Clubs/Shirts/Hats
– Members are able to get free or reduced cost clubs, a TFTCT shirt and/or hat through The First Tee of Connecticut.

The First Tee of Connecticut Certificate Program
– Youth are able to play free rounds of golf and hit free buckets of range balls at selected clubs and driving ranges throughout Connecticut.

Caddy Opportunities -
Caddying is a great way to learn the game of golf. In order to caddy, you must be 13+ and have a basic knowledge of the game. If you are interested in exploring possible caddying opportunities in your area, click on "Caddy Opportunities" to download a list of the golf clubs in Connecticut that have caddie programs. Simply call the nearest club in your area and ask them how you or your child can get involved. Feel free to mention your affiliation with The First Tee of Connecticut..

The First Tee Life Skills Experience

The First Tee Life Skills Experience is one of the unique features that differentiates The First Tee from many other successful junior golf programs.  Through the Life Skills Experience, participants learn valuable lessons about the importance of maintaining a positive attitude; how to make decisions by thinking about the possible consequences and how to define and set goals from the golf course to everyday life.
The First Tee Certification Process

The First Tee wants everyone who completes The First Tee Experience to have acquired basic golf skills and to be able to demonstrate certain fundamental life skill concepts – such as interpersonal communication and the importance of rules and etiquette.
The First Tee Coach

The First Tee Coach Program is an educational training program that prepares staff and volunteers at Chapters of The First Tee to deliver The First Tee Life Skills Experience, which includes the TARGET program, as well as the Par, Birdie, Eagle and Ace levels of certification.
